Mahler's Fourth Symphony turns into Jingle Bells.

  4. Little Bolero Boy ( 4 minutes ) $250/+$125/+$62.50 Rented separately

The Little Drummer Boy a la Maurice Ravel

Comments: "Best of all these head puzzles was Robert Wendel's "Classical Christmas Suite", which craftily blended some well-known pieces from the symphonic repertoire with various seasonal favourites, all the while showing such good understanding of the original music. Who knew that Mendelssohn had only finished with "Joy to the World" what Mozart had begun so well in his overture to "The Marriage of Figaro?" It was all very clever fun, which could be enjoyed at many levels." — "The Brantford Expositor," by Murray Charters, December 10, 2012

"(Steven) Reineke brought us something really different in Robert Wendel's variation on a classic theme- "Little Bolero Boy." Combining Ravel with the Katherine K. Davis classic had me looking at something fresh in the familiar music, though I did feel a little naughty as the inevitable build happened. There's no other word but WOW! — "Swingin' Christmas" with NY Pops, "Q onStage" by Sherri Rase December, 2011

"This brilliantly clever composition, (you'd swear you were listening to Bolero, although it was clearly The Little Drummer Boy), was a thrilling toe tapper — possessing the same relentlessly hypnotic pulsations as the original piece." — Stewart Schulman, Theaterscene.net January 1, 2012

"Outstanding among all those smart arrangers was the work of Connecticut born Robert Wendel. Responsible for two other highlights ("In The Manger" and "We Need A Little Christmas"), his fiendishly clever marriages of well-known classical pieces with various carols in his "Classical Christmas Suite" early in the program was an absolute delight. Wendel nailed the essence of Mozart, Schubert and Ravel, while guiding their sounds into stimulating settings of five tunes from Joy to the World through Little Town of Bethlehem, We Three Kings, and Star of Wonder to a perfectly selected Little Drummer Boy to replace the repetitious melody of Bolero." — Murray Charters, Music Critic for The Brantford Expositor, Canada.

"The most unusual, by far, was Robert Wendel's 'Little Drummer Boy', an astonishingly successful hybrid of Ravel's 'Bolero' with the familiar song by Henry Onorati. Anyone a little bit high would have thought it was Ravel's 'Bolero', complete with snare drum and brassy send-up at the end." — Mary Ellyn Hutton, Music Writer for The Cincinnati Post

"The other number that really got my attention was an instrumental version of 'Little Drummer Boy' that was arranged like Ravel's Bolero! In fact from the very first listen the song could have been very easily written that way. This is a good example of arranging and orchestration and something to look for on a Christmas album, a little different and unique." — Goldenscores.com

"An arrangement of 'Little Drummer Boy' based on Ravel's 'Bolero' is pure genius..." — Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (BP) Thursday, December 14, 2006

Instrumentation:2+picc/2/2/2 - 4/3/3/1 - Timpani, 2-3 percussion, and strings. Alternate parts included for a 2/2/2/2 - 2/2/0/0, timp, 1 perc and strings version of the first 3 movements.

Notes:"by far the most engaging work of the entire program, twisted three movements of Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker" into a nod to the Jewish musical traditions in a sort of "Fiddler on the Roof" meets Santa Claus - minor key slipping in where the major key would naturally fit." -Sherli Leonard, "The Press Enterprise" review.

HOLIDAY GREETINGS

Words and music by Robert Wendel
Description: This new work gives a nod to just about every year-end holiday you can think of from Advent to the Epiphany, and it received a very enthusiastic response from the premiere concert audience. Set in a sort of "21st century Baroque" style, this work spreads a feeling of good cheer to all listeners with an emphasis on a Happy New Year. The treble chorus is optional, as is the organ part, but if you have a good organ in your hall, there are 2 passages where it can be really shown off! If length is a consideration, the middle verse can be cut resulting in a timing of 3:40. This cut can be heard HERE.
Instrumentation:2+(opt)Picc/2+(opt)EHn/2+(opt)BCl/2 - 4/3/3/1 - Timp + 3 Perc - Harp (opt) - Organ(Opt) and strings, plus SATB chorus and optional treble/children's chorus.
Duration:5:00
Rental Fee:$280/+$140/+$70 - ($1st perf/+$2nd perf/+$3rd perf or more each)
50 chorus books and 20 treble books are provided. Additional books are available at 25¢ each.
Notes: Premiered December 5th, 2014 by David Charles Abell conducting the Philly Pops, The POPS Festival Chorus, The Philadelphia Boys Choir, and Peter Conte on The Fred J. Cooper Memorial Organ.

A CHRISTMAS CAROL FANTASY

Arranged by Paul Campbell (pictured)
Description:
Vince Trani
In its brief 3 year history, this arrangement has taken the UK by storm with some 26 performances and a French TV broadcast, and now we bring it to you, our clients! Songs included are: "Ding Dong Merrily On High," "The Sussex Carol," "Silent Night," "God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen," and "Joy To The World." The scoring is extremely flexible with vocal parts for amplified soloist, SSA Treble chorus, or SATB chorus, or any combination of singers and choruses.
Comments: "I'm impressed with the orchestration which is not only well done, but doesn't overwhelm the SSA voices. That's a great skill and not one that everyone has when orchestration for children's voices. So thank you for suggesting it. I will use it again." — Christopher Bell - Conductor, RSNO, RTÉ and Ulster Orchestra Christmas concerts (20 per year), Conductor, National Youth Choir of Scotland, Chorus Director, Grant Park Chorus, Chicago, Chorusmaster, Edinburgh Festival Chorus.

"Paul Campbell's 'A Christmas Carol Fantasy' is a festive, elegant and bright piece that fits perfectly into an end of year concert with symphony orchestra. At Radio France, we were very happy to premiere the work in December 2012, where it served as our finale to a televised gala concert with l'Orchestre National de France. The writing is idiomatic, skillful and natural for all instruments involved including voice and made a great effect - both with the players and singers as with our audience and producers." — Sofi Jeannin - Musical Director of Choeur de Radio France et Maîtrise de Radio France.

Instrumentation:2 (2d Picc)/2/2(2d B Cl)/2 - 4/3/3/1 - Timp + 2 Perc - Harp - Piano/Celesta - Organ(Opt) - Keyboard(Opt to cover harp, piano & celesta) and strings, and vocalist/chorus.

A CELTIC NATIVITY

Arranged by Paul Campbell
Description: Following on from the continuing success of "A Christmas Carol Fantasy" we now present a beautiful medley of four traditional carols from Ireland and Scotland for mixed voices and orchestra by Paul Campbell. Bookended by the well-known titles of Scottish carol 'Child In The Manger' (recognizable as the tune for 'Morning Has Broken') and 'The Wexford Carol' ('Good People All, This Christmas Time'), this lushly scored suite of carols also includes other Celtic gems audiences are sure to love - the haunting Irish melody of 'That Night In Bethlehem' (Don Oíche Úd I MBeithil - provided in both English and the original Gaelic) and the beautiful Scottish cradle carol 'Balulalow.' The scoring is extremely flexible with vocal parts for amplified soloist, SA Treble chorus, or SATB chorus, or any combination of singers and choruses. Pronunciation guides by Celtic Woman Vocal Director Méav Ni Mhaolchatha are included with every vocal copy, along with alternate English lyrics.
Instrumentation:2 (2d Picc)/2/2(2d B Cl)/2 - 4/2/3/1 - Timp + 3 Perc - Harp - strings, and vocalist/chorus. Percussion includes: Bodrhán (or damped Med. Tom-Tom), Surdo (or Large Tom-tom), Tambourine, Chimes, Glock, Vibraphone, Triangle, Piatti, and Suspended Cymbal.

A MERRY CHRISTMAS SING ALONG

Arranged by Robert Wendel
Description: This sing along medley has proven to be a major hit in its brief history. With lower/better keys it is easier for audiences to sing, and shorter intros and bridges make for more singing and less transitioning. It is also very flexible with numerous small cuts to tailor its length to your program needs. There is even an optional break for your conductor or concert host to pass along holiday wishes to your audiences! It contains: Deck The Halls, Jingle Bells. O Come All Ye Faithful, Angels We Have Heard On High, Silent Night, and We Wish You A Merry Christmas and can be as easily performed with or without chorus or soloists.
Comments: The "Merry Christmas Sing-Along" featuring the audiences joining in with "Deck the Halls" and "We Wish You a Merry Christmas," was the perfect ending to a magical show." — Amy A. Winnemoreon - PA Theatre Guide 12/6/2016
